Kingsessing, PA.
The goal of the Pollinator Project was to create a toolkit that would provide the community members of Kingsessing (Philadelphia, PA) with a viable entity and information on how pollinators can benefit them. Our group researched online and through interviews in conjunction to learn about pain points, wants, and needs within the community. Upon doing this research, we discovered a lack of grocery stores and pharmacies within the Kingsessing neighborhood.
Our solution to the problem was the creation of Seed Swap. This entity consists of multiple built structures and relies on community members to function. The built structure is a place where community members can pick up or trade seeds, produce, or garden essentials to take home, encouraging pollination. It is also a safe place to lounge and learn about pollinators and gardening.
How does it work?
Seed swap lives in the physical and digital worlds. Online the user can find locations for swap boxes that they can utilize to trade seeds and produce. Users can also use the website to find information on how and when to grow certain plants and also see what is available. In the physical world, people that participate in Seed Swap can visit the built site in Kingsessing that houses all kinds of herbs, fruits, and vegetables available to the community — whether it’s to consume, trade, or visit the pollinators.
